How to Safeguard Your Debit Card

Be Aware

Card skimmers are a common way for scammers to get your card information. These devices are usually placed on gas pumps and stand-alone ATMs, but can be placed on any card reader. Check the terminal to see if anything looks out of the ordinary. Give the card reader a tug, look for loose parts and make sure no security seals are broken. If you are ever weary, go inside to pay or move on to another location.

 

Keep Your Information Private

Do not give your information out and always keep your PIN secure. Be sure not to input any personal data online while on an unsecured Wi-Fi connection. A fraudster could be standing by hacking the connection to retrieve your information.

Set Account E-Alerts and Notifications

For Web-Branch alerts: log into Web-Branch from a PC, or your mobile web browser and navigate to the Services menu and select e-alerts.  From there you can enter how you want to receive your alerts (SMS phone number or email address).  Once you have your contact information saved, you can add alerts.  There are two different categories of alerts: security and account.

  • Security alerts will notify you when changes have been made to the settings in your Web-Branch Profile such a change in address, or password.
  • Account alerts will notify you when selected activity occurs such as transactions over a certain level, or daily balance alerts.

For Debit & Credit Card alerts: Using the “Debit or Credit Card Fraud Protection Alerts” link, you can register your card for transaction alerts.  You will need your 16-digit card number, expiration date, CVV, the last 4-digits of SSN and  zip code.  There are 4 types of alerts you can set up: Transactions greater than a designated amount, International Transactions, Card Not Present Transactions or Declined Transactions.
